We would like to personally thank Vern Gosney, the Retirees, Business Manager Jay Williams and the Local 342 Officers for the opportunity to talk to the very people the Foundation may be called upon to help. It was an honor to meet and have lunch with all of you.

2010 Annual Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational

A Mesothelioma Cancer-Cure Fund Raising Event

Posted: Jun 21, 2010

The 9th Annual “Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational” was held on June 21st , 2010 at the Napa Valley Country Club in Napa Valley , CA and once again saw an amazing turnout, generating over $80,000 for mesothelioma cancer research! As always, 100% of the event's proceeds will go to cancer research. Everyone at the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America sends a warm THANK YOU to all our supporters, sponsors and committee members who made this event possible.

You may recall that the event was established through the dedication of U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, and then California Building Trades Vice President Roger Hamilton, who came together in 2001 to brainstorm ideas for a fund raiser. It was Roger's idea to support research into a cure for Mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Although, Roger had been diagnosed with cancer several months before the first tournament, Roger was determined to make the first event in 2002 a success while having a great time out on the golf course. Cindy Hamilton has since been Chair of the Committee for the annual event and has done a magnificent job, dedicating many hours of hard work to bring friends and supporters together to lead the charge for a mesothelioma cancer cure.

This year's event was particularly special and included a very special guest, a mesothelioma survivor and patient of Dr. Parkash Gill. This gentleman's fight for survival began in 2008 when he was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. With the help of friends he was put in touch with the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America and began Dr. Gill's Veglin treatment shortly after. Since then he has undergone over 30 rounds of Veglin treatments, shrinking his mesothelioma to a size that can be removed through surgery. He is now living cancer free. This story of survival and triumph over this terrible disease is truly inspiring and serves as a reminder to all of the supporters and sponsors where their donations are going. We applaud his determination to survive and his inspiring outlook on life to beat this cancer and have fun while doing it!

After a beautiful round of golf, supporters came together in the clubhouse for drinks and a delicious dinner. Bob Balgenorth and Cindy Hamilton spoke of the great support everyone has shown each year in helping fund progressive treatments and an eventual cure for mesothelioma cancer. They thanked everyone for their continued support and introduced Jerry and Elizabeth Paul who highlighted how everyone's involvement has ensured progress by introducing Dr. Gill's patient who had just finished a round of golf. This gentleman paid homage to Roger and Cindy Hamilton who he felt helped save his life by choosing to support mesothelioma cancer research. He then told all the supporters his story of survival and thanked everyone for their support of him and the Foundation.

2010 California State Pipe Trades Council Convention

Leaders discuss how to help Labor Union brothers and sisters

May 2010

Leaders gathered at the California State Pipe Trades Council 19th Annual Convention this year on May 8, 2010 at Monterey, California. Four individuals, who are a dream team power house in their collective circle of influence, met and they are working together to bring hope for a cure to Mesothelioma. This is their story.

James W. Kellogg and Jerry Neal Paul support California Building Trades Unions and mesothelioma cancer treatment.
Rod L. Cameron, Harry M. Rotz, Jerry Neil Paul, and James W. Kellogg.

Rod L. Cameron is the Executive Director of the California State Pipe Trades Council who represents thousands of plumbers and pipe fitters at Local Unions throughout the state of California. In 1969 he joined the United Association so he too could represent over 300,000 members in the United States who work in the plumbing and pipe fitting industry.

Over the years, Mr. Cameron has worked in partnership with environmental groups, consumer groups, and other organizations concerned with labor work conditions including the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. With the California State Pipe Trades Council he has fought to ensure health, safety and performance evaluation of potentially dangerous or substandard plumbing materials before they are approved for use in the California Plumbing Code making the building materials accessible to plumbers and pipe fitters.

Rod Cameron has led the California Pipe Trades Council in its successful advocacy for stringent testing and review of new plumbing materials and this mission has protected California families and workers from exposure to potentially dangerous piping and other buildings materials.

Harry M. Rotz is the Business Manager over the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Local 447, based in Sacramento, California. A quick google search of public records show that he has been very active in leading the union as least as far back as 1993 and his influence in Sacramento City Hall through the plumbers union he serves is indisputable. Mr. Rotz leads the purpose of the Local 447 in a very humble and low profile sort of way. The Sacramento Bee newspaper says: “Union business manager Harry Rotz is described in political circles as a Wizard of Oz, rarely showing his face but constantly making his presence known. He never does media interviews, doesn't like to wear name tags at events, and at Sacramento City Hall is known simply as "Harry."

Sacramento Municipal Utility Board member Nancy Bui describes Harry Rotz as a man who gets the job done, "He's totally the wizard behind the curtain."

"(Rotz) carries the lion's share on a lot of things," said Matt Kelly, Secretary Treasurer of the Sacramento-Sierra Building and Construction Trades Council. "And what Local 447 does benefits all the building trades and labor in general."

While Harry Rotz humbly stays unknown to outsiders, his work through the Local 447 sustaining its mission is very clear: promoting unionized workers and taking care of the 1,300 plumbers the union represents. This includes being a part of the team to bring progress for a cure to cancer found in plumbers, pipe fitters, and all other laborers within the building trades.

Jerry Neil Paul and James W. Kellogg have created and brought us the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America with its mission to fund research that will lead to the quickest cure for mesothelioma.

Rod, Harry, Jerry and James got together at the convention to discuss and brain storm ways they could best help the Pipe Trades brothers and sisters get more help from the Foundation and Dr. Parkash S. Gill, Oncologist. Ideas and plans were made to further the progress of research on the Veglin clinical trials to Phase III, and how to get University of California Davis involved in the clinical trials.

“Aim to Cure Mesothelioma Cancer ”

– Birdslanding , California

April 9, 2010

The “ Aim to Cure ” Mesothelioma clay-shoot, hosted by Foundation Board Member and International Pipetrades Representative Jim Kellogg, was a great success bringing in approximately $75,000 for mesothelioma research. This year's event saw a larger turnout than previous years with 166 shooters and supporters of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America coming together at the Birdslanding Hunting Preserve and Sporting Clay Facility. Representing the Foundation at the event was Board Member Jim Kellogg, Medical Advisory Chairman Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker.

After a cease fire and a delicious lunch Jim Kellogg thanked everyone who attended and spoke about the importance of staying involved in the events and continuing to raise awareness. He then introduced Dr. Parkash Gill who informed everyone of the great news coming from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Medical Center . Veglin will be introduced into the 3rd and FINAL Phase of the FDA Clinical Trial process. Also, new Mesothelioma fighting drugs, EPH-B4 and Delta, are showing amazing results. This is fantastic news and can be attributed to the support and contributions from the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America.

As always, 100% of the money raised during the event will go to Mesothelioma cancer research. With these sizable donations we can be assured that Dr. Gill's Mesothelioma cancer research at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Medical Center will be moving in the right direction. Thank you all who participated and made the event a success!

DC EVENTS 2009

A big thank you goes out to Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16 who organized two events this summer to help raise funds for the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. The 7th annual Golf Invitational and the Cure Meso Clayshoot generated approximately $150,000 for mesothelioma research! In such difficult economic times, the success of these events and generosity of our supporters is truly overwhelming!

Representing the Foundation at both events were Board Member and Paul & Hanley Partner Jerry Neil Paul, Executive Director & Board Member Elizabeth Paul, Medical Director Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker. Speaking at both events, Dr. Gill emphasized the necessity of fundraising and the support of our donors and volunteers in making progress fighting this terrible disease. With their support we can beat this cancer.

Attendees at the 7th Annual Golf Invitational had a special treat and a reminder of exactly what we are all fighting for: testimony from a Mesothelioma survivor. After his doctors discovered his mesothelioma during a routine surgery, this patient was given a poor prognosis for survival. Never one to quit, he looked elsewhere for treatment and spoke with Dr. Gill about clinical trials and other mesothelioma treatment options. Now, a year and a half later, he is still being treated with a combination of Veglin and chemotherapy and has shown such progress that he is able to get back to work as a landscaper. What an inspiring story of willpower and triumph!

The Foundation would like to personally thank all of those who organized and supported this year's event. Without the support and organizing skills of people such as Jim Kellogg, Sid Stolper, Mike Layton and John Ferruccio, and Committee members Jerry and Elizabeth Paul, Jack Ferrara and David Harper, these events would not have been possible. THANK YOU ALL!!!

Student charity for Mesothelioma lung cancer research

Junior D. Fout shares about family and friends living with lung cancer

April 2009

Fund Raiser Coordinator Victoria Fout presents MESORFA Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker with the night's proceeds

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America was the proud beneficiary of a mesothelioma benefit dinner held at the Foothill Community Church in Angels Camp, CA. The evening was very special given the fact it was planned and hosted by high school student Victoria Fout whose father, Junior D. Fout, has been battling mesothelioma since January of 2007. The evening was kicked off with a delicious dinner and a silent auction to generate additional donations for MESORFA. Victoria Fout then presented the audience with facts on mesothelioma and highlighted the fact that mesothelioma is more than just a commercial you see on television. It is a cancer that we know little about and one in which there are very few treatment options available, underscoring the necessity of funding organizations such as MESORFA.

Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker attended the benefit on behalf of MESORFA and spoke about the advancements being made in mesothelioma research and the treatment options that are now available.  He thanked all of those in attendance since without the help of private donors mesothelioma research would not move forward and treatment options would remain limited. Victoria Fout then presented Shane Rucker and MESORFA with the night's proceeds, which totaled close to $5,000 and a fantastic result for a first time fund raiser!

The night concluded with Mr. Junior D. Fout giving a sincere and emotional speech highlighting the hardships that cancer brings on the family and friends of cancer patients. It is not just the patients who struggle with cancer. Also affected are those around the patient, known as the support group, who must watch their loved ones undergo long and difficult treatments.

MESORFA was honored to be apart of the event and wants to congratulate Victoria for putting on a great event!

Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf

Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf presented International Pipetrades Representative and Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America Board Member Jim Kellogg with a generous donation of $34,000 for mesothelioma research. This years' Contra Costa Sherriffs' Charity Ball was held at the Blackhawk Automobile Museum in Danville, CA and marked the 29th year of giving for the Contra Costa Sheriffs'. As always, 100% of the donation given to the MESORFA will go directly to the USC Comprehensive Cancer Center for Dr. Parkash Gill's mesothelioma research. This years' event was special for a couple of reasons. First and foremost this year included a 3rd beneficiary, the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund, which provides financial assistance to injured Marines and their families. During the festivities an American flag that was flown over Camp Fallujah in Iraq was auctioned off and generated an additional $10,000 for the Semper Fi Fund. This years' event also marked the second and final year that the MESORFA will be a beneficiary of the event. We wanted to extend our deepest thanks for keeping mesothelioma research in the public eye and providing the MESORFA with more than $90,000 in donations over the last 2 years. A special thank you goes to Sheriff Warren Rupf, Executive Assistant Maurine Wamosh, and International Pipetrades Representative Jim Kellogg who made it all possible.

March 10, 2008

USC Keck School of Medicine's publication of Internal Medicine Ink featured MESORFA's Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Parkash Gill for his work on a new cancer-fighting drug EphB4. The article highlights the effectiveness of EphB4 on bladder, breast and colorectal cancer calling it “a major step forward in the management of human malignancies”. In addition to these cancers EphB4 has also been shown to be effective on patients diagnosed with mesothelioma and we hope to have it submitted to the FDA this year for Phase I clinical trials. Thank you Dr. Gill for your continued dedication to making mesothelioma and other cancers thing's of the past.

Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America presented with a check for $110,000

December 2, 2007

California State Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, Chair of the Committee for the Roger Hamilton Golf Invitational, Cindy Hamilton, and Business Manager of the Alameda Heat & Frost Insulators Local 16 Steve Steele presented the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America with a check for $110,000 on behalf of the California State Building Trades. There to receive the check on behalf of the Foundation were MESORFA Board Member and U.A. International Representative Jim Kellogg, MESORFA Executive Director Elizabeth Ann Paul, and MESORFA Board Member and Founding Partner of Paul & Hanley LLP, Jerry Paul. The generous contribution was the result of the enormously successful Roger Hamilton Golf Invitational and the Aim to Cure Clay Shoot fundraisers held in 2007. The fundraisers have generated much needed funding for the mesothelioma research being conducted under Dr. Parkash Gill's leadership at the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. A special thanks goes out to all of those from the California Building Trades who helped organize and participate in the Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational and Aim to Cure Sporting Clay Shoot fundraisers.

United Association of the Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16...
do it again for the consecutive 5th year!

November 6, 2007

Los Angeles, CA. - For the fifth year in a row the United Association of the Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16 presented a check to Dr. Parkash Gill to help support his mesothelioma cancer research. District Council 16 Business Manager Sid Stolper, U.A. International Representative Jim Kellogg, MRFA Executive Director Elizabeth Paul and MRFA Board Member Jerry Neil Paul presented the $100,000 check at a recent meeting held in Los Angeles. Dr. Gill and his team of researchers were overjoyed with the support and highlighted the advancements made in finding a cure for mesothelioma.

Most exciting is the identification and early development of two new drugs, EphB4 and AXL. EphB4 is an anti-angiogenesis drug that has shown great promise in laboratory studies and will be submitted for FDA Phase I clinical trials in May of 2008. EphB4 is made up of two active proteins that block blood flow to cancerous tumors preventing the tumors from growing to an uncontrollable size. A lab in San Diego, CA is now mass-producing the proteins needed to make the drug available to mesothelioma patients. The Foundation and its team of researchers have very high hopes for EphB4. The second drug AXL is a very recent discovery by researchers at the USC/Norris Cancer Center and has proved to attack the proteins outside of the tumor cells in preliminary studies. We are encouraged by these recent developments and hope to have more information on their progress in our next newsletter.

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America appreciates all the hard work and tireless efforts put in by the fundraisers this year. Without their dedication and support, research would not be able to progress as much as it has. Thank you!

Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational

June 4th, 2007

Once again the "Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational" was a huge success, taking in over $120,000 for mesothelioma research! The event, held on June 4th, 2007 at the pristine Napa Valley Country Club, was the 6th annual golf invitational designed to promote a No Smoking atmosphere in the California State Building Trades. The event was established through the hard work and dedication of U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, and then California Building Trades Vice President Roger Hamilton, who came together in 2001 to brainstorm ideas for a fundraiser. Roger was the first Chair of the Tobacco Free-Off Golf Tournament Committee and it was his idea to support research into a cure for Mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Although, Roger had been diagnosed with cancer several months before the first tournament, Roger was determined to make the first event in 2002 a success while having a great time out on the course. To accomplish this goal he called over a hundred people to participate. Cindy Hamilton has since been Chair of the Committee for the annual event and has done a magnificent job, dedicating many hours of hard work to the event to bring friends and supporters together to lead the charge for a cancer cure.

After a beautiful round of golf Bob Balgenorth, Jim Kellogg, Cindy Hamilton, and Debra Chaplan all spoke of the great support everyone has shown each year for funding progressive treatments and an eventual a cure for mesothelioma thru The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. Jim Kellogg announced that the California State Assembly and Senate had passed a" Cure Mesothelioma Cancer Week" as an annual awareness week beginning in the first week of June, the first in California history! Dr. Parkash Gill, Board Certified Oncologist and Hematologist at USC/ Norris Comprehensive Cancer Hospital in Los Angeles, then spoke of his progress with Veglin and B4 in FDA Phase II trials. Elizabeth Paul, Executive Director, thanked everyone for their support and highlighted how it has not only ensured progress will be moving forward on mesothelioma but that it provided Dr. Gill with the funding needed to be the first to use an Anti-Angio Genesis treatment for mesothelioma patients at USC/Norris. Jerry Paul then spoke of how Dr. Gill's work has spawned other clinical trials around the country, which are now using drugs similar to Veglin for meso patients.

The Committe Members included: Roger Hamilton, Chair in Memoriam, Bob Balgenorth as Honorary Co-Chair, Attorney and Distinguished Course Sponsor Robert Arns, Mesothelioma Research Foundation Board Member and Partner at Paul, Hanley & Harley Jerry Neil Paul, Board Member and Executive Director of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation Elizabeth Ann Paul. From the California Building & Trades Council Debra Chaplan, Mike Cooper, Paul Doolittle, U.A. International Representative Jim Kellogg, Russ O'Brien, Executive Director of the California State Pipe Trades Ted Reed, and Business Manager of the Alameda Heat & Frost Insulators Local 16 Steve Steele.
